Choosing a Pre-Prep is about far more than choosing a school for the next few years. It is about the beginning your child carries with them into everything that follows.
The earliest years matter profoundly. Children are learning to read, write, count and communicate, but they are also forming their first understanding of themselves as learners. They are discovering what school feels like: whether they feel safe, known and understood; whether they have the confidence to try, make mistakes, persevere and succeed.
That is why getting the beginning right matters so much.
As Founding Head of Prep, my first responsibility is to ensure that our youngest children have the strongest possible start. I want every child to feel that they belong from the moment they arrive, and every parent to feel confident that their child is known well, supported thoughtfully and challenged appropriately.
Our Pre-Prep is shaped by warmth, purpose and high expectations. Children learn through clear teaching, strong routines, rich language, practical experience and purposeful play. We think carefully about what children need to know, how they learn best and how we can help them become increasingly confident and independent.
Play has an important place in this. It is not separate from learning, nor is it simply time to fill. Through play, children develop language, solve problems, test ideas, negotiate relationships and begin to make sense of the world around them. Alongside this, they experience a broad and balanced education in which music, movement, creativity, performance, outdoor learning and specialist teaching all contribute to their development.
Balance is important to me. If learning is too easy, children do not grow. If it becomes unnecessarily pressured, confidence can quickly be diminished. Our aim is to combine ambition with care: high expectations, strong support and a school day that enables children to develop curiosity, creativity, connection and character while remaining happy, secure and full of possibility.
When you walk into The King’s School Canterbury, Bengaluru Pre-Prep, I want that balance to be evident. Children should be thinking deeply, speaking confidently, listening carefully, exploring ideas and taking genuine pleasure in learning. Around them should be adults who know them well and understand when to guide, when to encourage and when to step back so that independence can develop.
This, for me, is what a King’s beginning should feel like: academically ambitious, deeply caring, rich in opportunity and grounded in the belief that every child should be known, valued and able to flourish.
By the time children leave Pre-Prep, I want them to carry with them more than readiness for the next stage. I want them to have secure foundations, strong habits, confidence, kindness, curiosity and a genuine love of learning.
The best beginning does more than prepare a child for what comes next. It helps shape who they are becoming.
I look forward to welcoming you and your child to The King’s School Canterbury, Bengaluru.
