Educated in Canterbury around 1474 (This predates the renaming of the school by Henry VIII to The King’s School Canterbury), he continued his studies at the University of Oxford before travelling to Italy, where he studied medicine at the University of Padua and learned Greek under some of the leading scholars of the Renaissance.
Returning to England, Linacre became physician to both King Henry VII and King Henry VIII. His translations of the works of the ancient physician Galen helped reintroduce classical medical knowledge to European scholarship. In 1518, he founded the Royal College of Physicians, an institution that remains central to the advancement of medical standards and education in the United Kingdom today.

Frances Houghton MBE joined The King’s School, Canterbury from the Dragon School and was still a pupil at King’s when she was selected for the Great Britain junior rowing squad in 1995. It marked the beginning of an international career that would become one of the longest and most distinguished in British rowing.
In 1998, Frances won bronze at the World Junior Championships, securing Britain’s first junior women’s sculling medal. Gold at the World Under-23 Championships followed in 1999, before she made her Olympic debut at Sydney 2000.
Frances went on to represent Great Britain at five consecutive Olympic Games. She won silver in the quadruple sculls at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, before adding a third Olympic silver in the women’s eight at Rio 2016. Having switched from sculling to sweep rowing for the final season of her career, Frances helped the British women’s eight make history by winning the nation’s first Olympic medal in the event.
Across sixteen years at senior international level, Frances became a four-time World Champion in the quadruple sculls, winning gold in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. She also became European Champion in the women’s eight in 2016 and established herself as one of the most accomplished British rowers of her generation.
Following her retirement from international rowing in December 2016, Frances was appointed MBE for services to rowing in the 2019 New Year Honours. She has also trained as a chef, written Learnings from Five Olympic Games, and shares the experience and insights gained during her exceptional sporting career through her work as Performance Advisor for UK Sport.
Five Olympic Games, three Olympic silver medals and four World Championship titles: an extraordinary career whose international foundations were already being laid while Frances was a pupil at King’s.

A. F. Steadman attended The King’s School, Canterbury on music and academic scholarships before going on to Selwyn College, Cambridge, where she studied Languages and Law.
Her path to becoming an author was far from a straight line. While training as a lawyer, she first wrote down the idea that would eventually become Skandar in 2013. For several years, however, the idea remained just that. Steadman pursued a career in law before leaving the profession in 2017 and returning to Cambridge to complete a Master’s in Creative Writing.
Then everything changed.
In 2020, Steadman secured a seven-figure, three-book publishing deal for her fantasy series about a world of fierce unicorns and the young riders who form bonds with them. At the time, the deal was reported to be the largest advance ever paid to a debut children’s author. Sony Pictures acquired the film rights in the same week.
Her first novel, Skandar and the Unicorn Thief, was published in 2022 and named Waterstones Children’s Book of the Year. It was followed by Skandar and the Phantom Rider, Skandar and the Chaos Trials, Skandar and the Skeleton Curse and Skandar and the Spirit War, completing the five-book series. Today, the award- winning Skandar books have been translated into 49 languages, with a film adaptation in development with Sony Pictures.
What is perhaps most striking about Steadman’s story is that it did not follow an obvious path: academic and music scholarships at King’s, a Law degree at Cambridge, a legal career and, ultimately, a return to the stories she had always wanted to write.
