Founded in 597 AD beside Canterbury Cathedral, The King’s School Canterbury carries a tradition of education shaped by scholarship, character, service and the development of the whole person. Since the founding of Junior King’s in 1879, younger children have held an important place within that tradition, guided by a simple purpose: to find the spark in every child. Bengaluru now gives this enduring heritage a distinctive expression for a new generation.
The story of King’s begins in Canterbury, where St. Augustine established a community of learning beside Canterbury Cathedral more than fourteen centuries ago.
In 1541, King Henry VIII granted the school its Royal Charter, formally establishing The King’s School Canterbury as a Cathedral school with fifty scholars. Since then, the school has evolved across generations while preserving a clear sense of continuity, purpose and tradition.
Today, its significance lies not only in its age, but in the enduring strength of the educational values that have shaped it across centuries.
Across its history, King’s has faced profound disruption. During the English Civil War and again during the Second World War, when the School was evacuated to Cornwall, education continued.
This ability to adapt without losing sight of what matters remains central to King’s: resilience expressed through steadiness, responsibility and the determination to move forward with purpose.
Junior King’s was founded in 1879 within the Cathedral Precincts and moved to Sturry in 1929, where its new home was opened by Rudyard Kipling. Its long-standing commitment to younger children is carried forward in Bengaluru.
For nearly 150 years, Junior King’s has recognised that the earliest years matter deeply, shaping confidence, curiosity, character and the foundations for future learning.
