Learning at Junior King’s

A thoughtful beginning to learning.

At The King’s School Canterbury, Bengaluru, learning is shaped by both care and academic purpose.

Junior King’s follows an early years and Key Stage 1 curriculum inspired by The King’s School Canterbury in the UK. In the earliest years, learning is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework - combining play, language, creativity, movement, and exploration within a carefully structured environment.

As children grow, the curriculum gradually draws from the English National Curriculum, introducing increasing depth in literacy, mathematics, topic-based learning, and personal development. The result is a balanced approach: a nurturing beginning alongside strong academic foundations.

A Curriculum that Grows with the Child

At King’s Canterbury, Bengaluru, we are proud to work closely with our sister departments in Canterbury, shaping an education that reflects the standards and philosophy of King’s Canterbury while recognising local culture and the interests of children in India.

In Nursery and Prep 1, children follow the play-based EYFS curriculum, designed around seven key areas of learning. The Three prime areas:

  • Communication and Language,
  • Physical Development,
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Form the foundation of early childhood learning. These are strengthened through Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

Within this framework, children are encouraged to explore, question, create, and develop independence through a balance of adult-led teaching and child-initiated learning. The aim is to nurture curiosity, confidence, and a genuine love of learning while building the foundations for future academic success.

As children move into Prep 2 and Grade 1, they begin to take greater ownership of their learning. The balance gradually evolves from predominantly play-based exploration towards more structured, teacher-led learning guided by the English National Curriculum. Strong emphasis is placed on English, phonics, reading, mathematics, enquiry-based learning, creativity, music, movement, and personal development.

Children are not rushed into formal learning before they are ready, nor are they left without academic direction. They are guided steadily, with the right balance of structure, encouragement, challenge, and independence.

How Children Learn

Young children learn best when they feel secure, engaged, and known as individuals.

At King’s Canterbury, Bengaluru, teachers build strong relationships with every child, carefully guiding learning around each pupil’s readiness, interests, and stage of development. Learning is purposeful and ambitious, but without unnecessary pressure.

The approach is neither entirely child-led nor entirely teacher-led. Instead, it combines structured teaching with opportunities for exploration, creativity, discussion, and independent discovery - creating classrooms that are active, thoughtful, and full of curiosity.

As children move into the later Pre-Prep years, progress becomes more formally tracked, helping teachers identify strengths, provide support where needed, and plan the right next steps in learning.
